Non-black socks a faux pas in town, I agree, but surely you would not consider a sober brown sock outre in the context of one's country garb?

With you on multi-colour bow ties. Is the waistcoat prohibition muli-coloured ones, or waitscoats in general? I am quite partial to a Mad Men 3-piece, all matching of course.

Just the gaudy ones - a decent waistcoat can be elegant. I am, indeed, wearing one myself on Saturday night to a ball. Single colour, white, marcella.

Is that the waistcoat or the ball?

Nothing wrong with silly socks, or silly waistcoats. Quite frankly you're all bunch of old fuddy-duddies! Get thee to New & Lingwood on Jermyn street and peruse some awesome gaudy clothing...

I've got two outstanding waistcoats. Trouble is, I can't get into them any more.

I've got a drawer full of black M&S socks.

My black sock extravaganza was the result of not being able to get any good ones in the UK, so last couple of visits to US I procured "quite a few" 5 packs of these beauties to supplement my collection. I swear I had enough socks in my luggage to provide socks to the london millepede centre* for the next 20 years.

A 5 pack at only $9, Industrial strength, extra thick.
I operate a similar process to the others, when socks get consigned to the bin when worn out, but as they are all the same, there is no hunting about in sock drawer for correct pairs.

If only it were that simple. I have black socks and black socks. Variations in size, fit, colour variation and material make this pursuit of perfection almost impossible. I too changed to the all black strategy (in my callow youth) but have now self-actualised and moved to a higher plane and gone for the full colour strategy: Blue, green, orange, red, purple, magenta, aqua marine, brown means that every sock has it's easily identifiable partner, not just in colour, but in fit, style and trim. Life doesn't get much better.

I wear my socks once and throw them away. I buy them from Jermyn Street.

Surely the whole point is to sneak off on your own to buy something garish and outrageous that your valet disapproves of? You then have some jolly japes and get into scrapes which your man rescues you from, and in thanks you then ditch the garish item...

A friend recently bought two 10 packs of socks in the US as they are the ones he likes.
