It depends on your age. When I was a lad, the PPL medical was valid for 5 years. Now that I'm a mature stable individual, it's only valid for one year.

My two pence

1. Get a class one medical from the off. Yes it’s expensive but you can let it lapse to a Class two. I’ve known three people who got class two medicals then completed a PPL. They then wanted to go commercial only to find out they were not able to hold a class one medical.

2. 80 grand to get a CPL/IR. If you know what you are doing (or know someone who does) you can do it for half that price.

3. Microlights may well be a “cheaper” way to get an NPPL/LAPL but these hours don’t count towards the 200 hours you would need for CPL issue.
