Varnishing A Wooden Propeller.

Postby Flintstone » Wed Jan 02, 2013 8:43 pm

I have to rub down and varnish my propeller. While doing so I plan to colour the tips too. Is it as straightforward as I think? Fine wet and dry, wipe down, spray in thin layers.

All hints, tips or advice gratefully received.

You will need to re-balance it afterwards

May be worth a call to Rupert Wasey at Hercules Propellers.

That's not hard. I have a nice simple prop balancer. It comprises a brass cup the same diameter as the hole in the middle of the prop (one inch, I thing) that fits into said hole and a spike as used by newspaper editors. The cup has a dimple dead centre of its base. Squeeze the cup into the prop hole and then sit it on the spike and you can readily see whether the prop is balanced, both longitudinally and traversely. Extra splodges of varnish are usually enough to get the prop back to perfect balance.
