Koblenz is a lovely airfield with a single runway, aligned 06/24 and about 1000m long. It is fairly exposed, being at the top of a ridge, so the winds can be quite strong here.

It is located near the small town of Winningen on the northern bank of the Moselle river and somewhat to the south of where the Moselle joins the Rhine in Koblenz itself.

It is a small airport, so easy to find your way around on the ground. You report in the prominent tower and they will prepare your bill for payment on departure. I don’t remember how much it was, but it was fairly trivial. There is a somewhat incongruous restaurant on the airfield itself, decked out with Greek statues. I don’t know what it served, but it looked like a decent quality place.

Koblenz itself is a good taxi ride, and they will call a taxi for you when you report to the tower if you ask them.

Koblenz itself is certainly worth a day or two exploring. There is an Ibis hotel in the town centre (part of the AccorHotel chain). I find AccorHotels ideal for a pilot as you can book over the internet, they are a sensible price and most importantly, they can be cancelled on the same day as arrival (weather is the enemy!).

Another useful feature at Koblenz is that the FISO can, with some notice, also do your Schengen passport control.

This is a facility offered at some (not all) German FISO airfields. You do have to "book" it beforehand so that the Bundesgrenzschutz can, if they wish, turn out to check you.

Koblenz can be a good solution if you want to fly frankfurt. It is just an hour away from downtown frankfurt, and coming from the north you skip the classic traffic close to Wiesbaden.

The B&B in Winningen, within hilly walking distance of the airfield, is recommended. Nora Emmerich. Stargate not included.

Frank (the Flying Dutchman) organised the 2012 Forum Flyout to Koblenz - the airfield coped with us extremely well, and with their usual cheerful smiles. Highly recommended.

It certainly does have that Catalina / Sedona aircraft carrier landing feel about it on approach, particularly runway 06.

Very friendly aerodrome and a good choice for the fly-out!!

We stayed in a hotel within a minute walk or less of both the planned dinner dates organised by Frank and could not have been happier - Hotel Weinstube Kornpforte - tourist/old style as opposed to latest business style inside, but with helpfull, willing and freindly staff.

Landing fee : E10.25
Overnight Parking on the grass for 3 nights : E~15.00.

They had a computer terminal for weather & Notams etc.
