New York Low Level Route

Postby Steve H » Mon Dec 01, 2008 7:58 pm

Thought you might be interested in the pictures that 'Canada Dan' took as I was gripping the yoke for dear life on a rented Cessna 172 while flying the NY low level route - turn on every light and get yer eyes out on stalks, but the views were amazing (well, what I saw of it!).

I have been around Manhatten in a helicopter on couple of occasions. Fantastic experience.

Impressive pics.
Flew that route in March 1980 in a Pa-28. We were flying from an airfield near the Hamptons- can't recall its name. We were just intending to bimble around Long Island but someone at the airfield said why don't we fly around Manhattan. Thought he was joking! Amazed at the ease of access.
I have some photos of the starboard wing looking UP at the top of the WTC towers. I'll try to scan them and post them.
Even back then radio was manic and lots of helo & GA traffic.
A truly memorable flight.
Over the next two weeks we drove coast to coast delivering a car for someone moving house from Rockaway Beach NY to Laguna Beach CA. The gearbox expired part way in Dayton Ohio -so we had to spend 2 days lurking around the USAF Museum at Wright Patterson. Silver lining and all that!

I highly doubt that it is true. There is no 'chatter' on any of the US sites.

Not least of which because it would immediately shutdown God knows how many helicopter signtseeing operations at a significant cost in tourist income and jobs!

Where did you pick this rumour up from?

I think it read it on these forums , it was a while back , something about september 11th issues and the route could be used by a cessna full of bombs etc etc.

It was probably just here say, i would love to fly that route.

Can you rent a plane in NY and do it ?

In that case, definitely a poorly sourced rumour! Amazingly, nothing has changed since 9/11 - nor even following the Cory Liddle plane crash into a skyscraper in the East River.

[q[quotean you rent a plane in NY and do it ?[/quote]

I guess so, I rented one in Canada and flew down to NY and did it.

Of course it will depend on your licensing, experience, checkride with the renter, the renters view, etc.

I suspect they wouldn't just rent out P1 to a low hour / 'based on' FAA license with a quick checkride - but I am sure you could easily be P U/T and log it that way - would be well worth it!! Plenty of airfields around NY to chose from.

thats how they make their money
now I can't comment on what they'd advise about flying that route but why dont you give them a call and ask?
On my landline its cheaper than calling a 0845 number
America is an excellent place to fly you'd love it!
