Ring Cycle recordings

Postby Jwscud » Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:51 pm

I am looking at branching out into different recordings of Operas I'm rather fond of. The only ring cycle I own on CD is the Karl Böhm Bayreuth recording, and am interested in getting another one (or possibly two) recordings for comparison and edification. The Solti studio recording is the one normally recommended; I am a big fan separately of Daniel Barenboim, and might be tempted to try the version he recorded at Bayreuth (I spotted it going cheap in town today). I know one or two proper experts drop in to offer advice, which would be gladly received.

I also stumbled across this marvellous limerick...

You can bet with a girl like Brünnhilde
(as with Tosca or Mimi or Gilda),
It’s a fall from aloft,
Or the blood that she’s coughed,
Or a meddling parent that’s killed her
I know it's a silly username. If you've met me, I probably introduced myself as Josh...

I have heard many, and they all have their ups and their downs, but what makes Wagner, and particularly Rings, is the conductor, and that always takes me back to Solti on CD and Barenboim if you want moving pictures.

As Timothy says - and perhaps this one: http://www.thehut.com/cd/richard-wagner ... 32413.html. A snip at that price!
