iPhone/iPad App support

Postby Timothy » Thu Apr 07, 2011 11:24 am

There are quite a few apps which allow convenient browsing of forums on an iPhone/iPad, but which require a plug-in installed in phpbb.

Would you be willing, in principle, to install the server plug-in? if so, I am willing to undertake a review of which of the readers works best.

I have tried the mobile version of the forum, but it does not really help with reading (though it does help keep data volumes lower.)

Did you pick that particular app after investigation of all the options?

Did Ian get back to you?

I mentioned that particular app because a few other forums I visit support it. There are alternatives to tapatalk but it seems to be the most widely supported.

Ian did reply saying he'd look into it but that was the last I heard.

The other alternative would be a true mobile skin for the existing forum. The existing 'mobile' version is handy but you still have to zoom right in to be able to click the tiny 'view next unread post' buttons.

A true mobile skin would require Ian to pay for a substantial amount of work, whereas, AIUI, the solution we are suggesting just requires a FOC script to be run.

Forum Runner is highly regarded as well. I've got a couple of these apps installed now.

You end up with an actual 'Flyer' app on your device including push notifications for subscribed threads and so on. It's free for the site operator to install, and the app itself is free for a read only version. It's £0.99 for read/write access.

If Ian or Liam are reading this thread, take a look here.

If you want to see it in action, visit AVForums from an iPhone or iPad, then tap OK on the pop-up.

It's very slick.

Some years ago I was told by one of the mods here (2D) that the server was also running a Usenet server, enabling the site to be accessed with a traditional Usenet client.

That is by far the most efficient way to read a forum.

Has this disappeared? I assume it has since Usenet is not very much used these days.

That would have been three or four servers and a different forum software ago.
