Guess the problem/cockup

Postby gfry » Wed Jul 27, 2011 3:32 pm

Take off from home based gras strip.....used a bit more runway than I normaly would. Climb to 3,000 and cruise at 2,400 RPM at 120kts.

All the while the engine feels a bit rough. T&P's all in the green. Carb heat onfor a while...no difference. Fuel pump on for a while....no difference. Change fuel tanks....no difference.

I do one more check and find my issue....can anyone guess?

Spot on....I left it on the left mag. God knows how I dont that.

Thats 3 mistakes in 6 years now:

1) Pulled mixture instead of carb heat on finals and did not realise until I needed a bit more power...2 years ago
2) Bust L10 airway about 2 years ago
3) left engine running on left mag for take off and first 15 mins of cruise this week.

If it's any consolation - my flying left a fair bit to be desired last night (from the same strip as you).

Mounted GPS and didn't find out until in the climb-out that I couldn't see ASI - OOPS!
Arrived back at strip way too high and too fast so executed go-around and put up all flap in one go - just as well I was too fast to begin with!

I had a passenger door open at about 50kts, prior to rotation yesterday evening, which slightly alarmed my 5 year old son at the time, who was sat next to it. I decided to reject take off with sufficient runway remaining to stop.

I was then asked to expedite backtracking the runway to exit at the usual holding point due to IFR traffic on the ILS, which led me to taxi past the holding point concerned, another short backtrack and we were off the runway with plenty of time.

Door secured, rest of the flight went to plan.
