Or use iExplorer if you're allergic to iTunes?

On second thoughts, forget that - when did they start charging 22 quid?

Steve, thanks for that. What about other content like PDFs? I have some flying PDFs stored on my WinXP computer that I would like to transfer. Do I just use the supplied USB cable adaptor?

I understand that the best PDF app is Goodreader. Will that allow me to transfer PDFs from my computer without going through iTunes?

And what about images - JPEGs and the like? Can they be transferred without iTunes?

And thanks Boswell for the link to iExplorer. Even if it's chargeable, it may be worth paying the price if it keeps me out of the clutches of iTunes.

I use Goodreader on mine for the full set of UKAIP aerodrome plates. It downloads those all by itself (when I click "Sync") using my LAN.

I transfer stuff between the iPad and the PC via the LAN (no cable needed). I've given my devices fixed IPs so I can have "iPad" and "iPhone" as icons in Firefox and connect/transfer that way. iTunes isn't needed for that bit.

I'm sure there are more ways.

Yep - as Keef says - GoodReader can be used 'wire free' and very good it is too.

Question: "Are there any plans to release SkyDemon for other platforms such as iPad or Android?

SkyDemon: "At the time, the PC is the dominant platform in the desktop and portable markets, so it makes sense for us to devote our development resources to creating the best possible product on that platform rather than spreading our resources to create mediocre products on all platforms."

Obviously Tim and the team saw where the market was going and reacted accordingly by eventually doing the proverbial 180 and bringing out an Ipad version. Whilst I appreciate fragmentation of Android and the sheer number of android tablets available would prove problematic to running his business efficiently, I can't help but feel that Tim and the team should release a version of SkyDemon for Android on the following devices:
For the 10" market - Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 on Jellybean 4.1 or 4.2 (whichever version Tim prefers)
For the 7" market - Asus Google Nexus on Jellybean 4.1 or 4.2 (whichever version Tim prefers)

No ifs, no buts, no exceptions. If people want SkyDemon on Android they must choose which of the above satisfies their need best. This would allow all of us who seek SkyDemon access via Android to get it, whilst limiting the work for Tim and his team to just 2 devices on the same version of Android. Tim may prefer a Nexus 10 as opposed to the Tab 2, but I think we should stay with the same device that Jeppesen has chosen as this will help Android users who subscribe to their services. Even if SkyDemon have no developers with experience in writing for Android, there must be plenty of developers out there who would jump at the opportunity to work on a programme with such a worldwide appeal - perhaps there may be readers here who could assist? What do others think of my idea? Go on, Tim, go on, go on, go on!!!

Now, having written the above, and just in case Tim and the team don't get around to writing an Android version before we run out of Avgas............

Do I really need to purchase the cellular version of the Ipad Mini to be able to use SkyDemon? I appreciate this is the only version with an integral GPS, but surely it is possible to use an external bluetooth GPS with the Wi-fi only version? On the assumption that I can, would an Ipad Mini (Wi-fi only) work with an external bluetooth Qstarz BT-Q1000XT GPS, or must I use one of those XGPS150 or Bad Elf GPSs I often read about? - I can't see why the Qstarz wouldn't work but I'd rather check to be sure. Lastly, in order to use a Qstarz BT-Q1000XT, must I jailbreak my Ipad Mini and use it with BT Stack GPS software, or was this only for earlier Ipad versions?

Kind regards in advance

Unless you want to jailbreak, you must use a GPS designed for iOS.

Current options are:

Dual XGPS150
GNS5870 or GNS1000
Garmin GLO
Bad Elf

That's a great quote. At the time we wrote that, the PC was the dominant platform in desktop and portable markets. When it ceased to be in the portable markets, we did SkyDemon for iPad. I don't think that was a 180 :)

Given that Android tablets currently account for 45% of the tablet market and growing by ~3%/month, and Android phones account for 72% of that market sector, how long does the iPad have left as the "dominant platform"...?

Maybe it is time to replace my now ageing Galaxy Tab with a spangly new Nexus 7! :thumleft:

Happy New Year!

You're slightly missing the point.

Firstly, those are the figures from one quarter and completely disregard the already installed base.

Secondly, even if those figures are right, they show one product line of 100% compatible devices has 55% of the market. The other 45% is made up of hundreds (if not thousands) of disparate products.

A much more accurate benchmark is to look at web traffic where you can see that the iPad still utterly dominates.

In the US and Canada! From Nov 2011, it would be interesting to see up to date numbers.

Tim's obviously got it right though with the mix of PC and iPad:

Those are quite interesting stats, but it's actually the percentages of usage of these devices among pilots that we're interested in. Pilots in general tend towards iOS rather than Android more than joe public, for some reason.

I think you'll probably get both ends, pilots either spend money like water , or are very mean!! Witness the £100 full English breakfast :D :D
I'm somewhere in between, I have an Android phone because it does everything I want for a third of the contract cost of an iPhone, but I bought an iPad solely because of SD, but now use it for lots of other stuff.

87 %of US tablet web traffic from iOS, early December 2012

Suspect that will be down slightly after the Christmas season - Kindle Fire and Nexus seem to be selling well.

Although those who take moral umbrage at Apple's closed-system policy on third-party app development would probably have an aneurysm at seeing the hoops Amazon make developers jump through to get their apps into the Kindle....
