Skydemon mobile or ipad miniSorry to start yet another SD post, and maybe it might be better posted on SD forum, but here we go.
I run SD on my Ipad 2 with separate garmin GPS receiver, and love it, however I find the ipad a bit large, so was thinking of going for a mini ipad, but would still run the separate garmin receiver, this got me thinking about Skydemons own unit, so here are my questions. 1. Has anybody compared physically the screen sizes ? How do they compare ? 2. How does the mobile compare to ipad version in its ease of use ? 3. Will the ipad eventually have more features than the mobile unit ? 4. How does the mobile unit receive updated Tafs etc ? Or doesn't it. 5. Can it be used in portrait mode, and does anybody have a picture of that ? 6. How do you receive, chart and software updates ? Do you have to connect to a laptop or is it a stand alone unit ? Sorry for the long list, but I have never seen the mobile unit, so need some of your thoughts, thanks.
I spoke to someone who went from SD on iPad to SD on one of their devices and whilst it achieved what he wanted (less space taken up), he was disappointed with the software in the new box compared to SD on his iPad.
I'd go for the mini IPad and sell your iPad 2 on eBay. Or (can't resist it) download ANP on your iPhone/iPod Touch and have a very cheap and reliable moving map GPS without needing separate antenna etc.
I have a SkyDemon Mobile device and have now used SD on an iPad Mini utilising the Beta release of SD which integrates georeferenced AIP charts with SkyDemon functionality and vector graphics - Simply Stunning.
The functionality and performance of SD on the iPad Mini is just superb and is going to be a world beater IMHO. I have ordered a Wifi/GPRS Mini which should be here on the 28th December and I can't wait! You will not be disappointed. Last edited by Cub on Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:29 pm, edited 1 time in total.
RAM mounts have a range of options available. I have flown with a mini and an xgrip which performed faultlessly and is beautifully built.
Re: Skydemon mobile or ipad miniI must admit I'm tempted with an iPad mini. One of the helicopter instructors next door has one and the size is perfect.
Must convince Herself that the investment is worthwhile. Fly Safely

I have used SD on an iPad since its been available, very impressed. Having seen the mini, I bit the bullet and ordered an iPad mini which arrived on Friday & I flew with it yesterday. I had it on a yoke RAM mount & it is just superb, doesn't block any instrumentation....it almost like it was designed for GA. anyone thinking of going that way, my recommendation is do it.
Cant wait for the geo referenced charts..... Moli
Re: Skydemon mobile or ipad miniMini is a very good form factor. I have no idea how it will do in an aircraft, but otherwise - it seems pretty good.
The only two reasons I didn't get one are, because I got few 10" iPads already, and I'd rather spend that £350 on couple flying lessons ;0 --
P/UT iOS developer <-- (yet another) ppl blog. Prob75 this msg was sent from iPad, not any toy.
Can you get the RAM mounts for the iPad mini in the UK yet, and if so, from where?

Re: Skydemon mobile or ipad miniAnd I remember the times, when SD folks were absolutely swearing that they don't want to have anything todo with iOS platform (I was asking them if they in need of professional services).

I think that was more the money grabbing tentacles of Apple than the device. SD found a nice way to bypass it, well done to them. Guaranteed 100% iFree
Quite possibly sent from my Nexus 7 which cost 400 quid less than your iPad. Capitalisation is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse
The device market has collapsed. We killed it. That was better than one of our competitors killing it. Follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/SkyDemonVFR
