[splutter!]

Most expensive suburb for housing outside of London is in Sheffield and a third of the city is in the Peak District National Park! So posh and nice

A quick reminder that the petition is still open for signatures to add to the 2780 made at the time of writing.

It only takes a moment to support the reopening of Sheffield Airport http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/s ... ityairport

The latests from the campaign organiser:

Thank you for signing the petition to help save the Sheffield City Airport, which currently has 3,666 signatures.

I can now update you with the information that potential operators have come forward wishing to purchase the site from its present owners and reopen the airport to commercial aviation. A meeting between the present owners and the new bidders is being sought and we hope to have positive news soon.

However we are most disenchanted with Sheffield City Council which, although well aware of this potential £multi-million investment from the private sector, is still refusing to publicly back this brave attempt to restore a facility which could be of vital importance to the regeneration of the local economy. We are committed to the view that any organisation which is willing to make such an investment in the public infrastructure at least has the right to know it has the support of the local Council. We are therefore redoubling our efforts to raise the number of signatures beyond the 5,000 mark, at which point we will be in a position to force the Council to debate the matter in open forum.

If every signatory encourages just one additional person to sign, we will comfortably pass our target. We would therefore urge everyone to circulate the petition to spouses, friends, colleagues and family members. Let’s make sure that the local Council is in no doubt that we mean business!

The address for the petition is: http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/s ... ityairport

Thank you once again for your support!

PS, since I received that note three days ago the petition has gone up from 3,666 to 4,578.

It's looking like Sheffield Council will be forced to debate this in chamber. More signatures please if you haven't already.

There's a(nother) teensy problem in that the planned route for high speed rail slices the end off the runway :?

Not really a problem. We could have it open again this year and operating for at least 20 years if HS2 it happens at all. Sheffield was only open for ten years before it closed. ;)

Moreover, the proposed route represents an opportunity to extend the runway with HS2 running underneath it. Sheffield would be the closest runway to a station anywhere on the route.

Thanks to pilotbarry for the photo :thumleft: - here it is with the proposed HS2 cutting shown. The track is about 25m below runway level according to this https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 42_3-0.pdf The red square is the HS2 station.

4963 now - just a few more to go.

I never managed to get into Sheffield - the day it was planned a month or so before closure was too overcast.

I learnt to fly from there. Really hope the campaign gets somewhere, it's such a waste having that runway doing nothing. There is no planning justification for redeveloping as a business park when there is so much disused brownfield land in the area.

It looks as though the petition has now toppled the 5,000 required. :thumleft
