Preston Banner flight under investigation

Postby mur007 » Wed May 11, 2011 7:46 pm

I did do a search and couldn't find any reference to this story:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011 ... -taunt-caa

Kinda sums up why so many people (especially on here  ) love the self-proclaimed beautiful game.

Footie could be a very lucrative market for banner towers!

In the link the article says "The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said no permission was granted and is now examining if safety rules were broken". What permission are they referring to? Is there any needed?

Also, what is the best way of pilots protecting themselves from potentially frivolous allegations? Would a GPS track with altitude be enough of a defence?

I cant understand how anyone can judge the height of an aeroplane from video footage with any degree of accuracy unless its blatantly obvious that the rules have indeed been broken.

If there has been no complaint what are the CAA so concerned about?

"After the match, North End's manager, Phil Brown, said the mockery was "distasteful" and "if I had a gun I would have shot the plane down"."

Yup, that's a sure-fire way to gain sympathy.

If you know the focal length of the camera and the actual size of something in shot, it's easy to work out how far away it is. Then it's just a matter of what angle up it is, gauged in relation to something fixed like the stadium roof. And then Bob rapidly becomes your uncle as you calculate the height.

I really hate football, it's a really boring game and all this peripheral carp is enough to make one lose the will to live.......

I've always found that peripheral carp are the most difficult ones to spot.

Easier with a fisheye lens.

Many years ago, if asked, you recommend a good fishing pole to catch peripheral carp, nowadays, a good fishing Pole would have have been there first anyway.

I was having a look at this video as I had no idea how banner were attached to airplanes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_j8kdVi ... re=related

Anyone has experience in this ? i d love to know what are the typical angle of approach, speed recommended, etc.

Did it many years ago - out of Blackpool interesting enough! This was before it was strictly legal at the time, but the "Happy birthday Maggie" one had just been done and all was under review, we had been given a nod and a wink OK provided we did nothing political or offensive. Technique is to come in low and at speed then pull up sharply, hoping you have hooked the banner, so as to lift it from the ground and not drag it along, you then push over at about 100' or so to avoid a stall and fly away at low speed with (fingers crossed) the banner attached.
Real pilots fly anything they can get their hands on!
