Skydemon, and tethering iPhone to iPad ?

Postby brucet » Fri May 04, 2012 3:41 pm

I'm a complete newby here, so apologies in advance !
I tried the free months worth of Skydemon, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to get airborne with my iPad to check out Skydemon aloft.
My question is this : my iPad is wi-Fi only (not 3G), but on the ground I can
Enable the personal hotspot on my iPhone to tether the 3G signal to the iPad via Bluetooth. So, has anyone had any experience of using Skydemon in the air employing this technique ? It would be useful to know if it works prior to
buying a years subscription to Skydemon !
And I would just like to say that on the basis of what I have so far seen of Skydemon, what a phenomenal piece of kit ! Well done, Skydemon !

Tethering the phone doesn't tether the GPS. You'll need an external Bluetooth GPS.

I recommend the Dual XGPS150

Thank you for your kind words. Tethering the 3G internet connectivity is all well and good, but that won't feed GPS data from your iPhone into your iPad. You'll need to get a separate GPS receiver for your iPad I think.

I might be mistaken and will double check, but an pretty sure that Air Nav Pro allows you to share the GPS from the phone to the iPad.

In fact, yes I just checked and you are able to share the GPS by bluetooth.

Yep, but ANP isn't SkyDemon :)

I was merely pointing out that it is technically feasible and that if required there are products that are available that will do this.

I am sure Tim will decide if it's something that he wants to do with Skydemon but in the meantime there are other options.

With software, you can do anything!

I have no plans to create a replacement for a real GPS on the iPad. My judgement is that our substantial pile of current projects is more important.

I am not sure that "with software you can do anything". Well, you almost can IF the Iphone/Ipad is jailbroken.

I have the "Dual GPS" (XGPS150) and it works very well with the Ipad2. It is not for sale in the EU, presumably due to not being CE marked (which is a load of bollox anyway) so I bought it on Ebay. I gather Expansys sell it. It has the advantage of being small, and not powering itself up accidentally.

They are releasing a CE marked and RoHS compliant version soon under the Axxera brand.

It's the same unit though...

Funny - I bought one from Proviation (.co.uk) a month ago, with only minor porkies told vis the delivery lead time ( three weeks actual as opposed to three days quoted). Super bit of kit that even one as dense as I managed to link first time to my iPad (1).
