More and more plates are getting added all the time. I would imagine Croatia will eventually end up on there. Bear in mind this is a brand new feature. You'll have to wait for some feedback from the SkyDemon team about this - or post in their forum in the 'Charts and Airspace Data' section. With regards to VRPs and whatnot, the data for some of the more far-flung places gets continuously refined, but sometimes it's necessary to point out the shortcomings to the SD chaps.

4 I have still not figured out how to save airfield plates so I can look at them off line in flight.

You don't need to do anything - once you've tapped on a plate, it will stay on your device for future viewing.

5 Every time I goto find plates on a Croatian airfield, skydemon freezes and I have to turn the iPad off to unfreeze.
6 Everytime I goto the charts page I cannot find a way out even if no updates are required. Pressing continue freezes the program.

I suspect these could be the same issue - did you definitely have a fully working internet connection at the time you did this? If - for example - you were connected to a public WiFi access spot, but had not yet authenticated, it can cause problems because unexpected HTML would be getting returned to SkyDemon. Some proxy servers can mess stuff up as well.

Skydemon on iPad in Croatia

Postby G MacDonald » Wed Jul 18, 2012 6:50 pm

Thanks for the advice. I knew it was my finger trouble!

Once I had saved the route and reopened it offline, the plates stayed. I had been planning the flight in the FBO and just keeping the planned flight on the main screen, assuming the plates I had already openned would work in flight. But in flight when you look at the plates they are not saved so do not work.

So now all I have to do is find away of saving the Croatian AIP so I can read that offline. Learning how to do all this beats the normal beech pastime of reading books!

That is all very interesting but I am not about to scrap the Garmin GTN750

This is arguably off topic here :) but every "modern" pilot has this issue.

When I bought my TB20 (new) in 2002, the issue was very obvious back then.

For the centre stack, I had a choice of a GNS430+GNS530 (or 2 x GNS430), OR a KLN94+KMD550. The full IR was a long term ambition only then but I wanted to fly all around Europe, and it was obvious that the Garmin option was all but useless for VFR navigation.

Well, it wasn't useless. IF one planned a route on IFR waypoints (which I have always done because it makes life so much easier all around, but I realise that many VFR pilots don't do that, and use village names etc) then the panel mounted kit delivers great functionality. Load up the waypoints (they are all in the database) and off you go....

The gotcha would be, being officially VFR, that foreign ATC invariably makes one fly via VRPs. That was a big reason I chose the KMD550 MFD - it shows all European VRPs (well, the official ones, in the AIP, not unofficial ones like "power station chimney" or "the tunnels" near Shoreham).

In practice one needs additional mapping and most "officially VFR" pilots hack that in various ways, but the best way is to have the actual "printed" VFR chart running as a GPS moving map.

Having such a facility also covers you for a loss of electrical power, which will wipe out your panel mounted stuff. An emergency is quite likely in effect VFR (because terrain comes into it, etc).

What route did you have problems with? Could you not fly e.g. PZ VRS PUL LOS ZDA SPL?

I've just downloaded skydemon for the first time and have to say that first impression do count and within a few minutes I'd paid my money for the full version.
So, having done that I get a message from SD's website asking who recommended me so they can reward them.
Since I found out about it here who should I nominate for their "reward"?

Can anyone tell me how to turn weekend view on and off quickly on both the iPad and PC version? I know it's there somewhere but struggling to find it!

On iPad version it's on the map layers tab. About third option down. Not sure about PC version.

So, today, less than 24 hrs after buying sky demon, I flew from Denham in the prohibited zone to Bembridge. The planning and filing was all done in a flash, I couldn't believe how simple it was. I've got a lot of expensive kit in my Falco but Skydemon knocks it for six. Well done to the team that developed it, one of the best value products I have ever bought! Thanks must also go to Apple for supplying the platform. I know many developers complain about apple's business model but as an end user I find it a massive breath of fresh air compared to the troublesome windows products.

Which I've just installed and it has now changed the icon to a 'SkyDemon LIGHT' icon  Though does appear to be the correct version.

Edit: and Graham beat me to it
