Is the clue in the bit about the ChartView Key - if this is not on the SD card you are trying to load with JeppView it won't work
I tried adding a pdf file to SD card, then I saw on DocReader two files, one was tha manual of 795 that was on device memory and second was the pdf I copied on the SD. I opened the second pdf, everyting worked perfectly.
I called Jeppesen on the phone, I spoke with someoane very interested to help me, I don't know his name, but he told me exactly the same like in the e-mail: ".. you need a preloaded data card from Garmin, it will not work with an empty SD card..", so the discussion ended quickly.
I don't really understand the last post of Peter Mundy "Is the clue in the bit about the ChartView Key - if this is not on the SD card you are trying to load with JeppView it won't work", I also think is something about ChartView Key that I bought from Garmin, but the SD card was inside the 795 when I installed ChartView Key on-line from Garmin site. Now I see ChartView Key Enabled on 795, so if it's somethig wrong or missing, what is it?
On the other hand, Garmin said that it will only work if I connect the SD card directly to computer, not through the 795, so the 795 (software, ChartView Key, etc) it's out of the question.
I think resolving this problem without pain and blood it's out of the question too.
It's quite clear to me that Jeppesen really don't know enough about installing their data on Garmin products.
I have a 795 and had a new blank SD card. I then bought the Chartview Key online from Garmin (fly.garmin.com) and it installed on the SD card I believe. I then subscribed to the Jeppesen IFR charts for the 795 and connected my 795 to my PC and eventually figured out where the JSUM software needs to install the Jeppesen charts. The answer is the root directory of the SD card : so select that card (Removable drive E: or whathaveyou) as the target for JSUM and it will then install the charts in the correct place....hopefully.
I think we all agree that the Jeppesen software is awful and that the customer support from Jeppesen is worse. If they didn't own monopolistic data, we wouldn't buy from them!
I hope that they release the VFR plates for the 795 soon

what I was trying to say is that, to the best of my knowledge, the ChartView Key needs to be on the same SD card as the data from JeppView - at least that is the way it is on my 695. I have not tried it on the 795 because I am not prepared to pay the full whack again to move JeppView from one GPS to the other.
OK, Peter, I understend now, I will try to reinstall ChartView key, I saw on fly.garmin.com that is posible to do reinstallation, and now I will make sure the SD card is inserted in the 795, I'm not 100% sure the SD card was inserted first time I installed ChartView Key. Begin to think that ChartView Key is the problem, I will reply with results.
The last replys from Jeppesen and Garmin support :
Have you purchased the SD card from Garmin?
Here are the storage media requirements:
SecureDigital (SD) card
FAT32 format (cannot be reformatted)
The aera 795/796 uses an SD Card for checklist files, Chartview, importing/exporting Flight Plans, and for storing PDF files for use in the aera 795/796 Document Viewer. (Garmin aera 795/796 Pilot’s Guide 190-01194-00 Rev. A page 134)
Must remain in unit during operation to access those databases which are not copied into internal memory and remain on the optional SD card, e.g. ChartView and MapSource data.
Replacement cards are purchased from either Garmin or Jeppesen.
Replacement cards from Jeppesen are blank, they are not preloaded with terrain, safetaxi or other data which you will need to obtain from Garmin.
In the previous email I directed you to Garmin to purchase a new card from them with the preloaded data that you will need as you cannot use an “off the shelf” or “retailer” purchased card and must contact Garmin for a replacement card so that you will be able to properly update your Jeppesen services on to the card.
Please contact Garmin and let them know you need a replacement card for your 796.
"Unfortunately, Jeppesen is confusing some of our products. In the case of panel mounted devices (G1000, GTN 750, etc.), store bought, off the shelf SD cards cannot be used to load data to. The only cards you can use are pre-programmed SD cards available from Garmin. This is because the devices are certified, and all of the parts that comprise the device must be certified.
However, since portable units are not certified under any regulations, the customer is free to use any SD card they choose to add additional mapping products to the 796 (or any portable GPS). Unlike our panel mounted devices, Garmin does not make pre-programmed SD cards with aviation data for the 796, because the aviation data for the 796 gets stored internally to the unit. If desired, additional non-aviation maps can be purchased on pre-programmed SD cards (TOPO maps, for example).
In any event, with regards to ChartView on the Aera 795/796, any SD card can be used to load chart data to. The ChartView data does not have to be on a Garmin pre-programmed SD card."
SO, I'm back to the square one.
Sounds to me as though Garmin are being clear - JeppView can be on any SD card, not just a specifically formatted Garmin card, but I am still pretty sure tht whatever card you use, the Chartview key needs to be on this card Z of ourse I ould be completely wrong
Peter or ArcherII, please help me with a test. Can you please try to make the current update for 795 or 695 to a new, empty SD card to see if you get the same error I get? If so, is clear that the ChartView Key needs to be on the SD card.
I tried reinstalling ChartView Key from fly.garmin.com, but it's not reinstalling from 0, is kind of updating, then it says that "you have the last version available", there is nothing written on the SD card, and ofcourse the error appears again in JSUM when trying to make the update.
Sorry - can't help on this one. The b*stards at Garmin insist I pay for a new unlock key for the 795 which I am not prepared to do and my 695 sub has expired and I am not going to renew it until Jepp offer VFR plates as well - just as they do for the iPad
Just a passing thought but have you tried calling Garmin in the UK direct - give them a try, ask for Alistair or Andrew who are some of the most helpfull people I have ever found at the end of a telephone and have always sorted out any problems I have had in the past.
Thank you Peter, I will call Alistair or Andrew if Jeppesen fail to help me, because I think the problem is Jeppesen update.
This is the last reply from Garmin:
"When you install the ChartView key on the Aera 796, an SD card is not used. You can only transfer the key via the included USB cable. I would suggest removing any SD cards from the device, and then connecting the 796 to your computer via USB and installing the ChartView key again. The flyGarmin website will allow you to install this key as many times as you want. "
So, the SD card is not important when installing ChartView Key from Garmin website.
I told Jeppesen about this, and they replyed me this:
I suggest to perform the steps below to clear up the cache file on your computer, then re-download the update.
Close JSUM, go to the C:\Jeppesen\JSUM\Cache folder and delete the info.bin file.
NOTE: It may also be necessary to delete any terminal chart folders in the C:\Jeppesen\JSUM folder. These are the folders that have a name which looks like a serial number. On Windows Vista/7, they will be under C:\ProgramData\Jeppesen\JSUM
Reopen JSUM and try reprogramming the charts again.
If the message still appears, uninstall and reinstall JSUM."
I tryed installing JSUM on another computer in the first day I was trying to update 795, and was not working, I had the same error, so reinstalling JSUM on the first computer will not help me at all. But the good news are that Jeppesen stopped saying that I need a "pre-loaded data card from Garmin" .
ChartView key installed to the 795 - do not follow the instruction on FlyGarmin.com to install direct to the SD card. Connect the Aera 795 to the PC and install
Insert an SD card in your card reader, start Jeppesen Services and install the charts to your SD card - this caused me endless problems as Jeppsum did not want to start the download process for the first few trys.
Insert the SD card into the AERA795
If you are not sure if the Chartview Key has installed correctly, check on the 795 under Tools / Database and you should see it listed there.
You do not require any special Garmin formatted SD card
Its progress I suppose...
I just downloaded to my 795 a one-off purchase of the SafeTaxi database from fly.garmin. It cost £75, which is of course a bit ridiculous, but there you go.
I now have little satellite-view diagrams as it were of lots of airports including little ones on my 795. For instance at Wycombe Air Park if I zoom in I can now see "Aircraft parking area", "Control TWR", "Main Apron" etc and all the runways and taxiways. They are very accurately georeferenced because the stored trails from previous flights from Wycombe now appear as dotted lines along the taxiways and runways.
I haven't checked which airports have safetaxi data and which not, but the large ones certainly do. Heathrow now appears as a big detailed map for instance, even from quite zoomed out.
I wonder how difficult it will be to purchase and then download the VRF charts from that difficult-to-do business-with business Jeppesen.....wish me luck!
I have updated my JSUM software to allow download of VFR airfield charts but as yet they do not appear on my 795. I suspect I may have to wait for the next chart update in a couple of weeks.
